Teas from Doi Mae Salong are of exceptional quality, with the area being mostly over 1300 meters the plantations here are the best in Thailand. The tea itself was brought in by the Taiwanese government to help the previously Chinese population who fled to the area during the reign of Mao Zedong in the late 70s and early 80s. The majority ethnic Chinese population have strong links to Taiwan and the many tea plantations are just one way in which the Taiwanese government along with the Thai Government has been helping the now 3rd generation descendants from the Republic of China.

With an average temperature of 15 – 20 Celsius during the cold months (with frost and zero temperatures not uncommon) the warm season brings in temperatures is between 24- 32 degrees Celsius.

Along with the ethnic Chinese tea plantation owners there are many other tribal peoples in the area. The main group being the Akha who can be seen selling their fresh produce in the towns local market at sunrise.
