Coffee in Thailand
Coffee like Tea in Thailand was introduced to remove the corrosive effects of the Opium trade in the border regions with Laos and Burma and the Golden Triangle. A cash crop to squeeze out the Opium grown there previously. It is now a thriving artisan economy with many families dependent on the coffee they sell to make a living.
The rich and fertile mountain soils of these regions offer the ideal location for coffee plants to thrive. In the little known village of Huay Hom it’s all about coffee, the locals supply the likes of Starbucks and other local coffee chains, package and roast to your desired taste and have a wealth of knowledge on the coffee creation process.
Thailand has been growing coffee for more than 100 years although recently it has seen a decline in its production. The main coffee grown here Is Robusta with Arabica grown in certain northern border provinces.
The difference between Arabica and Robusta is huge, the taste varies (depending on the roast) with Arabic being slightly softer in flavor with a lower caffeine content which reduces its bitterness. Robusta has been grown in the past due to its resilience and ability to grow in low altitudes but with downside that it has a more bitter taste. Of course that is down to the individual pallet!
